Merckx advises Andy Schleck to ride the Giro
I couldn't agree more. A win in il Giro d'Italia would be an immense boost to Schleck's confidence, whereas finishing off the podium in France, which is not unlikely, would be detrimental. A comparison of Individual Time Trial kilometers and summit finishes between the upcoming 2012 edition and recent Tours:

YearITT kmsSummit finishes
200956km3
201061km3
201142.5km4
201296km2.5*

I say there are 2.5 summit finishes because Stage 7 ends at La Planche des Belles Filles, in the "medium mountains" at only 1035m altitude.

Finishing off the podium could be disastrous for Schleck, and he needs to be honest with himself and go for the win in Italy while leaving himself open to the Vuelta in the fall.
